Thunder Bay social service agencies are accepting donations from those wishing to help in the aftermath of a massive earthquake that struck Chile on the weekend.

The Salvation Army and Red Cross are accepting donations online, over the phone and in person. The money will go to relief efforts in the country where 8.8-magnitude quake struck early Saturday morning.

“They do have Chilean Red Cross on the ground,” said Rob Zuback, manager of fund development for the Red Cross‘s Northern Ontario region.

“We are accepting donations at the Red Cross branches across Northern Ontario, and everywhere else, for that matter,” he said. “Right now, the Canadian Red Cross is essentially monitoring the situation, and then they‘ll determine whether there‘s further action required.”

The Salvation Army is focusing on providing food, water, first aid kits, blankets, candles and other urgently needed supplies to quake survivors, a news release states.

As of Monday afternoon, about 730 people had been confirmed killed in the quake.

Donations through the local Red Cross can be made in person in Thunder Bay at 1145 Barton St., by phone at 1-800-418-1111 or online at redcross.ca.

Those wishing to donate to the Salvation Army can do so at salvationarmy.ca, by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or by dropping off or mailing contributions to the Salvation Army public relations office at 545 Cumberland St. N., Thunder Bay, ON, P7A 4S2.

Contributors should specify their donations are for Chile earthquake relief efforts.
