Monday marked the kickoff of this year‘s Kidney Health Month, and throughout March every bowl of chili purchased at either one of Thunder Bay‘s Wendy‘s restaurants will see 25 cents donated to the Kidney Foundation. “Our goal for the month of March is (to raise) $35,000,” said Lisa Cashin, the Kidney Foundation‘s local chapter co-ordinator. “That will be from Wendy‘s as well as door-to-door canvassing. We have over 600 volunteers going door-to-door.” The money, Cashin said, will go to local kidney patients. “We do various activities and various funding for patients, such as travel, medical costs, startup for dialysis, things like that,” she said. Last year, the fundraising efforts raised just over $35,000, Cashin said at a news conference at the Memorial Avenue Wendy‘s restaurant Monday morning. “People in Thunder Bay are very, very generous,” she said. “It seems to do really well – we have a huge success each year.” A news release states two million Canadians are living with kidney disease, and many don‘t know it as they‘re unfamiliar with the symptoms. About 1,200 Ontarians are waiting for a kidney transplant, with thousands more on dialysis. Kidney Health Month – and World Kidney Day on March 11 – is a global awareness campaign aimed at informing people about the importance of their kidneys and reducing instances of kidney disease and associated health problems, the release states.
