Sherry took the crown during the last race of this year‘s North American Ice Boating Championship Regatta, held last week at the Silver Harbour Conservation Area just outside of Thunder Bay. In doing so, Sherry – who‘s now won the title eight times – beat out 57 other competitors over several races. California‘s Matt Struble placed second, while Steve Orlebeke of Wisconsin finished third, said Jim McDonagh of the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association. This year‘s regatta got off to a slow start last Monday, with a lack of wind preventing any actual racing from happening. Tuesday was marginally better, although the wind only allowed one qualifier to be run before dying down again. “(Thursday) we ended up sailing our three gold races and three silver races,” McDonagh said Sunday. “Then on Friday, we sailed one gold race, and that was right at the end. It was quarter-to-six or so. “I gave out the trophies after the sun had set,” he said. “In the dark.” The group had until Saturday to get all the required races in. Had the wind not co-operated, the regatta would have simply not happened. “We‘d totally come on back,” McDonagh said. “Everybody had a great time, it was a great venue. “Everybody loved it. Really loved it.” Top of Page |
