Former Thunder Bay city councillor Betty Kennedy is seeking the Thunder Bay-Rainy River riding NDP nomination for the next federal election.
Kennedy said Monday she believes that the next election will be based on health care, the economy and the environment.
Kennedy has stated that job losses in Ontario, the shortcomings of the Canadian health care system and the country‘s Kyoto protocol commitments are of primary concern.
“The critical needs of Northwestern Ontario are clearly not being heard in Ottawa,” said Kennedy, who is bidding to take on incumbent Liberal Ken Boshcoff. “It‘s time for action.”
Kennedy has been working in native child welfare at the provincial level. She has not been directly involved in politics since the 2003 municipal election.
The party‘s nomination meeting is to be held at the end of March, with a travelling ballot box moving through Fort Frances and Atikokan on the 29th, and Thunder Bay on the 30th.
Other federal candidates nominated in the region to date are Liberal Don McArthur and New Democrat Bruce Hyer, both in Thunder Bay-Suuperior North where Tory Joe Comuzzi is the incumbent.
The Green Party has announced that a nomination will be made in March, or sooner if an election is announced.
