The Lakehead Thunderwolves spent the past week licking their wounds after being blown out on consecutive nights while vowing such an effort won‘t be repeated when they host the Windsor Lancers for two games at the Fort William Gardens starting today. “It sounds kind of funny saying this, but when you see the scores it probably could have been much worse,” Thunderwolves coach Joel Scherban said of his team‘s 7-2 and 8-3 losses to the OUA-leading Western Mustangs which knocked them out of the national rankings. “Two very, very disappointing games. This week we focused on getting our intensity back up. . . . A lot of conditioning skating. I‘m trying to get back to where we need to be.” Many players took their time leaving the ice after Thursday‘s 80-minute practice, choosing to play rapid fire games with goaltender Kyle Moir. The hoots and hollers were no doubt a relaxing end to a tough week of practice. “We tweaked the lines a little bit. We added a few more drills. We didn‘t feel we needed to make major adjustments,” said assistant captain Scott Dobben, the last to head to the dressing room. “We got it handed to us pretty good over the weekend, but we can‘t just make a wholesale change and mix everything up.” Lakehead (11-5-2) is still within striking distance for one of the top two seeds in the OUA West playoffs. But five of their regulation losses have come at the hands of three division rivals – Western, Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier – with just one win against. “Over the past few years we haven‘t played as well against the top teams as we should have,” said head coach Joel Scherban. “It‘s something we talked about this week with our veteran players and our leaders to make sure we don‘t fall into that pattern again and make sure we elevate our game when we need to.” The Lancers enter the weekend at 7-8-3 and have held their own against the division‘s juggernauts. A Thunderwolves lineup with three big holes will greet them at the Gardens, a place where Lakehead is 11-1-0 overall this season. Leading scorer Brock McPherson (lower body) will miss both games after being injured by an errant puck against the Mustangs. He had missed the latter part of the first semester with a shoulder problem. Defencemen Kalvin Sagert and Mitch Maunu are suspended for their penalties last weekend and won‘t play today. Sagert will be back Saturday while Maunu is out for both contests. “Fortunately we have a lot of depth on our team and there‘s a lot of guys who can step up,” Scherban said. Newcomers Matt Caria (three assists), Matt Dias (one assist) and Ryan McDonald (two goals, one assist) put up solid numbers in their OUA debuts against Western and may be ready to fill the void. “They‘re starting to get back into it. You can see the skill level of these three players and they‘re going to be good,” said Dobben. “But there‘s a transition phase.” Dog Tags: Dobben is second in team scoring with 10 goals and 14 assists. Windsor‘s Mark Thorburn leads the Lancers with 16 points in 18 games. . . . Lakehead gave up five powerplay goals last weekend. . . . Thunderwolves Mark Soares and Dan Speer have combined for two assists in their last four regular season games. Top of Page |
