Thunderwolves gain revenge on Mustangs

Kyle Moir is seeing everything in front of him these days. The Western Mustangs simply see the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the rearview mirror charging hard.
Moir made 33 saves to earn his second-straight shutout as the Thunderwolves blanked the Western Mustangs 4-0 in OUA hockey action at Fort William Gardens on Friday night.
The win avenged one of the two blowouts the Mustangs handed the Thunderwolves in London, Ont., earlier this month. With a win today, Lakehead (16-5-2) will get a chance to complete the payback – and tie Western atop the West Division in the process.
Moir has played the last 121 minutes and 28 seconds in net without the opposition scoring a goal. The Thunderwolves have allowed just three goals in their last four games overall.
“We‘ve started really focusing on our defence,” Moir said.
“So far we‘ve shown we can do that. . . . I can‘t say enough about the guys in front of me. They were blocking a lot of shots I couldn‘t see.”
Thunderwolves coach Joel Scherban said his team‘s shaky play after the exam break has proven to be quite the wake-up call and have responded with a five-game winning streak.
“The players deserve most of the credit,” Scherban said.
“They‘ve committed to doing what it takes to win games. They knew they weren‘t going to win (high-scoring games) in the playoffs and nationals.”
Andy Hyvarinen, Matt Caria, Pierre-Marc Guilbault and Ryan McDonald scored for Lakehead while Andy Zulyniak had a pair of assists.
The Thunderwolves attacked from the opening puck drop, outshooting Western 5-1 en route to a 21-shot period. Hyvarinen popped in a loose rebound under Mustangs goaltender Keyvan Hunt to break the ice at 1:11.
As a 4-on-4 turned into a brief Mustangs powerplay, the Thunderwolves completed a passing play between Mitch Maunu and Kalvin Sagert at the point that ended with Caria banging home his fourth of the season midway through the second frame.
On an ensuing Lakehead powerplay, Guilbault found daylight from the right face-off circle to fire a wrist shot through a crowd and past Hunt.
Moir made his stops against several quality chances.
Moir stuck out his left pad on a quick, low point show from Western‘s Ryan Martinelli for his best save in the second period, but was fortunate in the third period when Jason Furlong had an open net and slipped the puck right through the crease.
“I‘ve felt every game I‘ve tried to get better,” Moir said. “There were a few bumps in the road. Sometimes there are little things you can build on during that game and I‘ve just got to get going.”

Dog Tags: Lakehead leading scorer Brock McPherson sat out his fifth game of the season with an undisclosed injury. . . . Arron Alphonso, Brennan Menard, Devin Welsh, Bryan Wilson and Mike Thibert were among the Thunderwolves‘ healthy scratches on Friday. . . . During a mini-scuffle after the second period, Martinelli got into a heated struggle with linesman Kevin Kuluski. . . . Western‘s Keaton Turkiewicz had his 18-game consecutive points streak snapped as the Mustangs (18-5-0) dropped to 2-3 since winning 16 in a row. . . . Friday‘s attendance of 3,495 was the highest this season.
