TBSO Masterworks 6

Jennifer Koh performs Brahms

Thursday, 8 p.m.

Thunder Bay Community Auditorium

ARTHUR Post has been musicdirector of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra since 2010.

During his tenure, the TBSO has built upon its reputation as one of the finest regional symphony orchestras in Canada.

Under Post’s leadership, the TBSO has been a leading commissioner of new Canadian compositions, and last year Post led us through the production of a new album of contemporary compositions by Jordan Pal that were given their world premiere performances right here by our own professional symphony, raising the profile of our city and our orchestra on the national scene.

This is the second recording our orchestra has made with Post, the first being our 50th anniversary album made during Post’s first year as music director.

On Thursday in the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium, Post and the TBSO bring both our 56th concert season and Post’s tenure on the podium to a close.

This very significant concert includes powerful and memorable music, and features international violinist Jennifer Koh performing Johannes Brahms’ sweeping and dramatic violin concerto, one of the greatest works in the entire repertoire for violin and orchestra.

The program opens with another TBSO World Premiere performance of a new work by Juno Award-winning composer Jordan Nobles.

To cap the evening, Post has chosen the fiery and dramatic Dances of Galanta by the Hungarian master Zoltán Kodály. Evoking memories of the composer’s childhood in Transylvania, mythic home to Dracula, this sparkling work was inspired by the traditional gypsy melodies Kod?ly reinterpreted for the full symphony orchestra.

Whenever one symphonic season comes to its close, we look forward with eager anticipation to the one that is to come.

The 2017-2018 TBSO 57th anniversary season will be on display at Thursday’s concert, and subscriptions as well as tickets for this concert are now available from the Community Auditorium box office, online at www.tbca.com or by calling 684-4444.

Paul Inksetter is president of the TBSO board of directors.
