From Slovak with love

Marcelo Greer holds the new French translation of Milan Vinco Casta’s book, which will be launched Friday evening at The Study coffee house at Lakehead University.

Through a long-standing friendship, the work of Slovakian poet Milan Vinco Casta is being debut in Thunder Bay but with a French twist to the classic pieces.

The launch, which is taking place this Friday at 7 p.m. at the Lakehead University Study, is being billed as a Celebration of Love and will feature readings, music and a prize at the event.

Marcelo Greer, a long-time friend of Casta, is one of the lead organizers of the launch and originally translated of the book titled . . . and Love Flew Near into English from Slovakian in 2013.

“The message of love is the most powerful force and we need to understand it,” said Greer.

The tale of how the two met started when Casta was Greer’s running coach back in Slovakia. Greer said her former coach was a major influence on her and credits him as the inspiration to push her to her limits. This ultimately helped her escape the then community country during the 1980’s.

In Slovakia, Casta’s work is widely published. It can also be found online. On Amazon, his work is described as spiritual poetry with a powerful emotional charge with love at the centre of the book.

Greer said she thought the book’s release near Valentine’s Day was fitting given that love plays a big part in the anthology.
