Fire causes about $500K in damage

The cause of a fire that destroyed a Marathon home and caused an estimated $500,000 in damages remained unknown Friday. Marathon fire Chief Earl Grigg said Thursday’s Poplar Crescent blaze has been deemed “undetermined” while an investigation analyzes the scene and photos of the noon-hour fire as it began to engulf the home. Nobody was injured in the fire. Grigg said the amount of damage, while significant, doesn’t meet the threshold of an Ontario Fire Marshal investigation. It took about six hours to ensure the fire was completely out. Grigg said he was still reaching out to the home’s owner Friday. There have been five structural fires in the town since Grigg became chief just under a year ago.
