Kam River Fighting Walleye goaltender Eric Vanska stands his ground during preliminary round action against the Steinbach Pistons at the Centennial Cup junior A hockey championship in Portage la Prairie, Man., on Sunday. Vanska surrendered five goals on 47 shots as the Fighting Walleye fell 5-2 to the Pistons. The Walleye dropped to 0-3-0 in Group B play and eliminating them from the medal round. Kam River — the Superior International Junior Hockey League champions — was off Monday and will conclude its schedule against the Collingwood Blues on Tuesday afternoon. Ryan Doucette is the Fighting Walleye’s top scorer with three assists in three games, followed by Jeremy Dunmore and Max Leduc (goal and an assist each) and Euan Morrison (two assists). The defending champion Brooks Bandits lead Group A with a 3-0-0 mark. The Ottawa Jr. Senators (1-1-1) and Cobras de Terrebonne (1-0-1) currently hold the other playoff spots. In Group B, the Battlefords North Stars defeated the host Portage Terriers 3-2 on Monday and lead the standings at 2-1-0 followed closely by Portage (2-1-0) and Collingwood (2-0-0).
