Memorable visit

An Angelo Papa hat trick led Juventus to a 4-2 victory over Fury in Thunder Bay men’s senior soccer action.

The Gladiators edged Lakehead Express 4-3 with Liam Coulter and Colin Brescasin each scoring twice for the victors. Paul Sworczuk netted the games lone goal in Nucci’s 1-0 win over the Junior Spartans while Rainbow Realty edged the Chill U17 boys 2-1. Sleeping Giant and the Chill U19’s fought to a 1-1 tie, with Victor Fuentes and Marco Colistro on target for their respective clubs.

On the ladies side, Anna McLean struck twice to pace the White Lions to a 5-2 victory over Mr. Lube. Velocity beat the Nordmin Miners 2-1, with Rebecca Veurink and Rileigh Briand both on the score sheet. Inspired shut out Daniars 3-0 with efforts from Luisa Dibiagio, Sarah Izzo and Katie Sobczak while Nathalie Vachon hit the target 4 times in Tigers 7-0 win over Legends.

Alex Callienteris netted three goals as the Chill SM blanked the Chill EM 7-0 in the Thunder Bay Youth soccer league. Emily Beattie and Alexa Lombardo each found the back of the net as the Express U14 girls drew 1-1 with the Chill EF. A pair of wins for the Express U18 girls, defeating Impact 2-0 with goals from Erica Vidotto and Lexi Adduono, followed by a 4-1 result over the Chill EM, with Megan Clarke bagging a brace for the victors.

Congratulations go out to Chill senior players Anthony Putrus and Sullivan Silva. Both have been included in the end of term PDL All Central Conference 11.

Additional kudos also go out to members of the youth teams who have been in Georgia this past week, to participate in the West Ham identification camp. Earlier in the year these players were identified at a regional camp held in Duluth and invited down to the national camp. By all accounts the players have represented the city with class and respect on and off the field.

PRO/INTERNATIONAL WATCH: The 2016 Rio Olympics commence this week with the Canadian women’s squad opening their campaign on Wednesday against Australia. Group play is concluded with Saturday’s game versus Zimbabwe and a tough encounter with Germany next Tuesday.

A big win for Toronto FC at the weekend, blanking the Columbus Crew 3-0. The Reds have mid-week action as they take on Real Salt Lake on Wednesday evening.

Teams continue to prepare for the upcoming new domestic season, with new signings and exhibition games.

Juventus have been in the news with the 75 million pounds addition of Higuain from Napoli but look like losing Paul Pogba to Manchester United for somewhere in the 100 million price range. On the field, Arsenal beat the MLS all-stars 2-1, Manchester United defeated Galatasaray 5-2 and Real Madrid got by Chelsea 3-2.

This Sunday United take on Leicester City in the annual Charity shield game, which pits the league champions against the cup winners in the seasons curtain raiser.
