Skiers brave wet conditions

Mikkai Jones on the start line at Lappe Nordic Centre. Despite the unpredictable weather, skiers and volunteers braved the rain and snow for the centre’s annual Boxing Day Classic in Thunder Bay on Thursday. Even though the day started out with rain, Mother Nature came around and switched over to snow. Kara Viehbeck and Owen Moffat each won their under-6 100-metre dash. Joyanna Zavitz and Garrack Hall won the under-8 900-metre races. Other race winners  were Hazel Moffat and Markus Jamsa (under-10), Kaia Hakanen and Noilan Nyitrai (under-12), Cedric Martel and Maaritta Puiras (under-14), Edgar Sarrazin and Carley Kiisila (under-16) and Josh Zavitz and Anna Stewart (under-18). Tierza Wilson and Eric Schlyter won the under-20 title, and Laura Inkila won the open women’s 5K. Rena Viehbeck topped the field in the master women’s 5K, while Julie Hunt won the 10K. Olivier Doucet won the master men’s 10K, and Evan Palmer-Charrette won the open men’s 10K.
