A busy week in the Thunder Bay soccer schedule as all the various leagues in the city have kicked off their new campaigns.

Sunday saw the opening night of the Thunder Bay Men’s Division I season with the Chill JRM defeating Lakehead University 7-1 with the Chill getting two goals apiece from Ben Melchiorre and Jag Arena.

Earlier in the week it was the ladies turn for opening night with Carlolyn Fragale scoring four times for the Bombers in a 6-0 result over Mr. Lube.

In the other Gold flight matchup, the Schneider’s Molarbears tied 1-1 with Velocity with Marissa Manzini and Jenna Ward on target for their respective clubs.

Silver flight play saw Nancy George score the only goal of the game as Daniar’s Algoma Dental edged the Legends 1-0, while TNT and Cheadle’s fought to a goalless draw.

Also underway were matchups in the Thunder Bay Youth Soccer League with the Chill SM opening with a 4-0 shutout over Impact.

Nick Phyllis and Caleb Stefanato each netted twice for the winners.

Impact did respond with a 4-0 win of their own over the Chill RF.

A pair of victories for the Chill EF on Saturday included a 2-0 win over the Express Under-12 boys with Madi Sdao and Hannah Keesic each on target.

That was followed by a win over the Lakehead Express Under-13 girls with Sdao and Ali Hurtig each bagging two goals.

The new look TB Chill Premier Development League squad took to the field for the first time with a pair of exhibition games against the visiting Winnipeg Lions.

A 4-0 shutout on Saturday was followed by a Sullivan Silva hat trick and a 5-1 win the following day.

It also gave the coaching staff a look at all the players before they travel to Manitoba next weekend to take on WSA Winnipeg in the league opener. Also making the same trip are the Chill youth teams, who will be participating in the Boston Pizza Players Tournament at the John Blumberg Spotsplex.

Good luck also to the Hammarskjold Vikings boys and St. Ignatius girls teams who hit the road to represent the city in the annual Ontario high school championships.

The boys head to Hamilton after defeating St. Ignatius 3-0 in the city final, while the girls head to Belle River after a 3-0 final victory over the Westgate Tigers.

Manchester United has booked themselves a place in next season’s Champions League competition by defeating Ajax 2-0 in the final of the Europa League.

Arsenal claimed the English FA Cup by defeating league champs Chelsea 2-1, while Barcelona claimed the Spanish Cup with a 3-1 result over Alaves.

This week’s marquee matchup will see giants Real Madrid and Juventus square off in the Champions League final in Cardiff, Wales.

Finally, Toronto FC continues to roll in the Major League Soccer standings thumping the Columbus Crew 5-0 at Toronto’s BMO Field.

The Reds look to continue their impressive form June 3 in New England.
