Vikes bite back

Danielle Charles of the Hammarskjold Vikings takes to the air while being defended by St. Patrick Saints’ Julia Buset during the first day of the regular season in the Thunder Bay high school senior girls basketball league on Tuesday. The Vikings outscored the Saints 18-10 in the final quarter to break a tie and win 45-37. It was the first win for the defending champion Vikings over the Saints, who had defeated Hammarskjold over the weekend at the Lakehead Thunderwolves Tournament. Hammarskjold is gunning for its sixth city championship in the last seven seasons. In the other senior game on Tuesday, the St. Ignatius Falcons rolled past Superior Collegiate 70-32. The Westgate Tigers, the lone idle team in the five-team league, open their season on Thursday at home against St. Ignatius. In the city’s high school senior boys volleyball division, Dennis Franklin Cromarty, Westgate and Hammarskjold all picked up straight-set wins.
